Securing Antiques and Possessions
Sorting through antiques and possessions can feel like a big task after a loss, but you can manage it. We’ll help you secure everything and get it valued properly for probate. You’re not alone; here’s how to do it, step by step.
Step 1: Lock Things Down
Make sure all items are safe; store them in a secure place like a locked room or cabinet. Check the house is protected too, so nothing goes missing while you’re sorting. It’s a simple start.
Step 2: List Everything
Go room by room, write down every item that stands out; think furniture, jewellery, art, or collectibles. A clear list keeps you on top of it all. Take your time, you’ve got this.
Step 3: Consider a Professional
For probate, you’ll need accurate values; consider a professional appraiser for anything valuable. They’ll spot what’s worth more than you might think, and it keeps things straight for the estate.
Step 4: Find an Appraiser
Look for accredited valuers; use the RICS Find a Surveyor or the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers (SOFAA). Enter your area, pick someone with experience in antiques or possessions. It’s worth getting the right person.
Tip: Take photos of key items; it helps the appraiser and your records.
Step 5: Get the Valuation
Give the appraiser your list and access to the items, then let them do their work. Once you’ve got the figures, you’re ready to add them to probate. It’s a solid step forward.
