Finding the Will
After a loss, finding the will is a big step; it’s the map to sorting everything out. It might feel daunting, but you’re not alone. We’ll guide you through where to look and how to make sure it’s the right one, step by step.
Step 1: Start at Home
Check their home first—drawers, filing cabinets, or a safe if they had one. People often keep important papers close. It’s a simple place to begin, and you might find it straight away.
Step 2: Contact the Solicitor
If it’s not at home, reach out to their solicitor. They might have the original or know where it’s stored. If you’re unsure who they used, look for letters or bills from a law firm among their papers. We’ve got your back if it’s tough to track down.
Step 3: Check with Banks
Some keep their will with a bank for safekeeping. Call or visit their branch, have the death certificate handy to explain why you’re asking. It’s worth a try if the solicitor draws a blank.
Step 4: Search the Probate Registry
If it’s still missing, the will might be registered with the Probate Registry. You can search their records through GOV.UK—it’s not a long shot, and it’s there to help. This could be where it’s been waiting.
Tip: Keep any copies you find safe; don’t mark them or remove staples, as it matters later.
Step 5: Confirm It’s the Latest
Once you’ve got it, check for updates. Look for codicils—extra pages amending the will or a newer version tucked away. The latest one counts, so compare dates carefully. If you’re unsure, we’ll help you sort it.
